Namibia Rock Art Safari

Day 1 - Hilltop House, Windhoek
Your guide will meet you at the Windhoek International Airport and transfer you to Hilltop House in Windhoek.

Hilltop House was built in 1958 and has an old world charm reminiscent of bygone days. Oregon pine decks and commanding views over Windhoek add to the appeal of this wonderful home.

We will visit the National Museum which has an excellent rock art exhibition, specifically about the Apollo 11 site. The exhibition should provide a good perspective for the rock art to be viewed on our safari.

Accommodation: The Hilltop House
Meal arrangements: None included

Day 2 and 3 - Spitzkoppe
The Spitzkoppe Mountains are about 240km west of Windhoek and the roads are all paved except for the last 20km. Spitzkoppe rises 600m above the surrounding plains to a height of 1,728m above sea level. Its resemblance to the famous Swiss mountain earned it the name of the Matterhorn of Africa.

The sprawling granite outcrops, valleys and peaks offer many hours of fascinating exploring with some of the country's oldest rock art to be discovered.

Accommodation : Spitzkoppe, camping
Meal arrangements : Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4 - Ameib, Erongo Mountains
We drive to the spectacular Ameib Ranch. Ameib Ranch is a privately owned farm in the Erongo Mountains close to Usakos on which the Philips cave is situated. The rock art in the Erongo mountains is very similar to that found in the Brandberg and appears to be of the same age having been dated to approximately 3368 BC.

The paintings on the farm are in good condition and a noteworthy painting is that of the white elephant.

Accommodation : Ameib, camping
Meal arrangements : Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5 - Omandumba West, Erongo Mountains
Omandumba West is also a privately owned farm in the Erongo mountains and has paintings as well as engravings. The paintings are not only of animals but also of strange ritualistic figures. The figures also differ substantially in appearance which might indicate different ethnic groups.

Accommodation : Omandumba West, camping
Meal arrangements : Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6 - 8 - Brandberg Mountains
The Brandberg dominates the surrounding Namib desert and is 2,573m at it’s highest point. The area was home to Bushmen for several thousands of years and still holds a wealth of their artefacts and rock paintings and engravings. Some are still to be found!

The Brandberg is one of the most significant rock art discoveries in southern Africa containing more than 1000 sites. The painting of the White Lady is situated in the lower Brandberg. Spend three days exploring the mountains.

Accommodation : Brandberg, camping
Meal arrangements : Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 9 - Twyfelfontein
We travel north to Twyfelfontein and the most famous rock site in Namibia. The slopes above Twyfelfontein are littered with large rock slabs, with the largest concentration of rock engravings in Africa. The engravings are mostly of animals but there are also human footprints, animal spoor and some abstract motifs.

Accommodation : Aba Huab, camping
Meal arrangements : Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 10 - Peet Albert's Kopje, Kamanjab
We continue northwards to Kamanjab, where we visit Peet Alberts Kopje. This special site shows a range of impressive rock engravings.

Between two and two hundred thousand years ago people utilized their skills to depict their day to day encounters with game in the area. The inhabitants might have chosen this site, because even during dry years, the deep holes in the granite ensured a constant water supply.

Accommodation : Oase Garni Guest House
Meal arrangements : Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 11 and 12 - Okaukuejo, Etosha National Park
We arrive at the enormous 22,000sq km Etosha National Park in the late afternoon. Herds of Burchell's zebra, springbok and numerous other antelope species provide continual hunting opportunities for the lion prides. Etosha is famous for its elephants and also boasts healthy populations of black rhino, Damara dik-dik and black-faced impala.

Characterised by its thatched rondavels (hut-shaped bungalows), Okaukuejo is Etosha’s oldest and most popular rest camp. Its floodlit waterhole attracts wildlife such as elephant, black rhino, a variety of plains game and the rare sight of Burchell’s and Hartmann’s zebra in the same frame. Activities include game drives to several excellent waterholes nearby.

Okaukuejo is the main administrative centre and headquarters of the Etosha Ecological Institute, where research and nature conservation management in Etosha are conducted.

Accommodation: Etosha, Okaukuejo rest camp
Meal arrangements: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner

Day 13 - Windhoek
After breakfast and a final game drive we depart for Windhoek to be in time for your flight. En route we will visit the wood carving market at Okahandja.

Meal arrangements: breakfast
